The FIELD before us...

Good Evening Men!

When I was a young boy around ten years old, our family lived on a farm that was no longer productive.  It had several barns on the property and several dirt roads that would carry you from one field to another.  There was about 26 acres in all.  My brother and I spent many hours and days especially during the Summer time exploring the entire farm.  I was the son that wanted to help Dad around the farm.  Not all the time mind you, but I always had a feeling that if I helped Dad, I would end up having fun someway.

This particular day, Dad had decided to plow the upper field on the back of the farm near Back Creek that ran through the edge of the property.  I had always enjoyed that area of the farm.  I thought that Dad wanted me to look through the field and pull out rocks that might damage the Bottom Plow that trailed the Massey-Harris Pony tractor that we had on the farm.  Me and Jim had always wanted to drive the tractor but always knew that Dad would never trust us to do that alone, until now.

I was with Dad, when he asked me; Ted, do you want to plow the field today? Wow, Dad, I'd love to.  Dad said, "Well Son, the tank is full of fuel and the oils is topped off, hop in the seat."  That seat was so very big, but I could reach the pedals with ease.  I knew how to drive the tractor, but the plow depth I didn't know anything about.  Well Dad explained it to me and told me how to set the first row and he would watch me till I made the run and come back.  That was a big field.  So I started the tractor and dropped the plow into the dirt.  I placed the tractor in first gear and set the gas on the third notch, letting the clutch out I was off.  It took about 10 minutes to get to the end of the first row and returned to the beginning where Dad was waiting.  I turned the tractor around and waited for Dad's instruction.  He walked over to me as I lowered the throttle on the steering column.  He said, Son, always look at the very end of the row and point the tractor there and the rows will always be straight.  You should finish this before night and then head to the barn lock it up and come to the house for supper.  Are you okay with that? Yes-sir! I headed out and he headed out to the house.

At that time, I turned and looked at the 6+ acres in front of me and put the tractor in first gear, and just before I let the clutch out all I could think was; "This sure is a big field."  I let the clutch out and off I went.

I was fearful, but I was also instructed by my Dad.  He would never steer me wrong.  Psalm 34: 4 says; "I sought the Lord, and He answered me, and delivered me from all my fears."  The field was before me and it intimidated me, but with instructions from my Dad, I knew I'd be okay.  That's a lot like life.  It can be scary, but if we turn to God and read His Word and Pray and seek His face, He will guide us in powerful ways. He has all the instructions and He wants to guide you.  Ask Him to guide you today.

Prayer:  Dear heavenly Father. Lead me and guide my heart in powerful and growing ways that I may always give you praise and glory in all things, in Jesus' name I pray, Amen!
