Lessons in Being Humble Before God....

James 4: 10  Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord and He shall lift you up. (KJV)

Many years ago I began memorizing Bible verses.  I hadn't really given much thought to memorizing verses but I had received as a gift from a Pastor friend of mine a small plastic container with little cards stacked inside.  The wording on the top of the lid said "Precious Promises".  Each of the small cards had a single daily Bible verse to commit to memory.  Today's verse was the first one that I pulled out and read.  The meaning made me really scratch my head, as I didn't really understand what the verse meant.  The meaning wasn't what I was out to achieve at this particular time so, I tucked the small card into my shirt pocket and at various times throughout the day I would pull the little card out and recite the verse and the reference as to where it came from in the Bible.  By the end of the day I had fully memorized the verse along with the reference.

Over the years I have come to the conclusion that it's great to be able to quote the Bible but it's also as great to tell where the verse is found in His Word.  It seems to add a deeper sense of seriousness and commitment to the Word especially when quoting it to others.  A note here, just quoting Bible verses can sometimes come across to others as arrogant and prideful.  Please be careful that what you say is heartfelt and purposeful in God;s desired outcome.

In the process of memorizing this first verse the meaning just eluded me.  The verse I had, but for all practical purposes it appeared useless unless I could understand its application.  The more I thought about the more empty I felt about it's application.  A vicious cycle no doubt.  I read the surrounding verses for context, still nothing.  I have remembered this verse to this day and in God's wonderful timing, He has revealed the meaning of this verse in so many different ways which I will cover over the next several devotionals.  We often want right now what may take more time than we anticipate to fully use that which God has placed in front of us.

Tomorrow we will dig a little deeper into God's purpose for this verse in my life and maybe in yours as well.

Prayer: Dear Father in Heaven, I pray that You will guide me to take your Word more seriously with each passing day and you reveal a deeper greater purpose in my daily life in Jesus' name, AMEN!

May God richly bless us as we continue to seek His will and His way, through His Word.

Have a Great Day!!
