And now.... BILLBOARDS!!!

If we were look at our lives as if we were driving down the highway or even a downtown street, the roadsides are full Billboard advertising.  I have seen everything from Church advertisements to Gentlemen's Clubs, as well as anything you might like to eat and "On Sale"......  But several years ago I was working in the Raleigh North Carolina area about 60 minutes from home and I decided to take a new route on the way home to see if I could shave off any time on my commute.  Well a new route requires that I look around and see what I could see and at the same time being safe.  I noticed some Motel Signs and that some had changed their names since the last time I had driven in this direction.  Then I saw it.  A sign advertising a Gentlemen's Club in the next town situated right at the interstate near a Truck Stop.  The sign was quite clear at what is was advertising.  There was NOTHING good about what they were offering.  As I drove this road occasionally I noticed the sign getting a bit beaten down.  I couldn't help but think of the sadness in the lives of those women and girls that had been lured into working in such an awful place.  This one particular time I drove by that place of business and sure enough there was a parking lot full of cars trucks and the like.  My heart just broke.  Now many years ago I had dealt with my own issues in Pornography and I know full well the "hook" it can create in the life of old and young men alike.  But that Billboard.  I would pass it occasionally and I would pray that one day soon it would shut down.  Then every now and then I would drive by that place of business and see if God had yet decided to answer my prayers.  Well about a year went by and as I was driving by one day I noticed there was no one in the parking lot.  I had been reading the paper and listening to the local news from our town and there it was.  This gentlemen's club had been shut down.  Not only this particular one but their sister club as well located several miles away.  I couldn't believe it.  They had failed to meet a particular statute and an undercover "sting" had exposed them as a house of prostitution as well.  And the city had shut one down and the county had shut the other one down.  They tried to reopen on several occasions but it never happened.  Every time they tried they were shut down by the local government.  But the Billboard.  It was still up but now they had posted a sign stating "reopening soon".  Well I began praying that the sign would be torn down along with the advertisement, enough was enough. about six months later sure enough the sign was gone and a new full-size billboard was put up advertising "Bojangles' Restaurants".  Now that was a much better distraction.

There are still many offensive signs along the roadside.  Some advertising through the means of "Soft Porn" and you know exactly what I am talking about.  They get us as men not thinking about the ad but thinking wrong thoughts down mental and emotional roads we don't need to travel.  We need to guard our hearts and minds in Christ.  We need to commit every thought to His care and keeping.  We are to bring every though "Captive" to the obedience of Christ, (2 Corinthians 10: 5-6).  Yes this takes time and it takes work, hard work but it can be done.

Our lesson today, leave the billboards alone.  A simple curious glance can set the tone for the entire day.  "Driver Beware".  Satan is trying to distract you.  Don't let him win....
