Do Not Quench….

I Thessalonians 5:19-20 19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not treat prophecies with contempt (NIV)

We have a warning from Paul that we should not "quench the Spirit," so we must always be aware of how the Spirit is quenched. When we quench the Spirit, it is like putting out a fire. Our sins quench the Spirit. Our decision to turn from God and respond in a bad way to the temptation of sin and commit sin quenches the Spirit. God sensitizes our hearts to do what is right and good. We desensitize it by the frequency of sin that we allow into our lives. Some people say that this is our conscience letting us know when we do wrong. God has placed safeguards in our lives to make us aware of His presence. We know when we do wrong and this quenches the Spirit. Making us aware of the wrong we have committed is one of the tasks of the Spirit. We must adapt to a conscious awareness of when we quench the Spirit, so we will be aware of what is taking place in our lives. We will be held accountable when we do this so...yes this is another sin that we can commit and must ask forgiveness for.
When we quench the Spirit, we dishonor our Holy God. He wants us to maintain our fellowship with Him, and this takes a conscious effort. God honors our desires to seek Him and makes Himself easy to find......at the foot of the Cross....in His most Holy Word...through prayer. The avenues He wants us to use are holy paths that reach to only Him. He knows that our focus should be on Him and guide us there through His Word.
"Do not treat prophecies with contempt." refers to what the prophet and teachers said in the New Testament as well as the Old Testament. Paul was a learned man of the Old Testament scrolls and knew them well. He knew that despising these sayings and writings of old would only bring judgment to believers. You need only to look back at Exodus, for example. The children were held in the wilderness until the unbelieving generations died out. Only then were they allowed to enter the Promised Land. We are to hold their words in high regard and learn from them.
It is good that we seek to learn more from God through His Spirit. We should be careful to NOT quench the Spirit and to respect God's Word by reading it and applying His truth to our lives. When we read His Word, we find areas we know apply to our lives. We should listen and seek God's guidance and strength to better understand His touching our lives.
Key Point: Allow God to touch your heart through His Word today.
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, Show me how to express a conscious effort that I may not quench the Holy Spirit and that I may be sensitive to His moving in my life. I Jesus’ name I pray, Amen!!!

Word of God…...

Isaiah 40:8 “The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the Word of our God endures forever.” (NIV) What a promise this is! I have listened to people try to justify their actions by using the Word of God and compromising what it says to meet their particular needs. God’s Word needs no help. In this particular verse, we see that there is no room for compromise. We can lean on His Word, stand on His Word, speak, teach, and preach His Word, and the only thing we must do is let Him guide our hearts and minds in the delivery of His Word to others. Our confidence in His Word must be sound and unshakable, but we must also be able to accept humility when we do not understand what it says and seek His guidance to know Him more.
