The Fullness of a Thought

Proverbs 18:13 He who answers a matter before he hears it, it is folly and shame to him. (NKJV)

When I was a child, I remember Dad saying, “Son, you have to think before you speak!” That advice has stayed with me throughout the years. At times I still find myself trying to master this advice.
Sometimes we get so drawn into a conversation that we take over without thinking. I remember one time in a conversation I was waiting for this co-worker to inhale so I could butt in and interrupt the flow of their thought injecting my own, which I considered to be much better than the person with whom I was talking. First, that was rude. Second, that was wrong as well. It was very inconsiderate of me to do this. The excitement of the subject of conversation overtook me, and it turned “unprofessional” quickly! After the meeting I remember my co-worker saying that was very rude and unprofessional of me. I did not want to be either, but this was a good enough friend and co-worker that he could be so truthful with me. I trusted him. I later took my friend aside and thanked him for waking me up and alerting me of the negative impact of how I tried to control the situation. Lesson learned (again). Thanks, Dad! Your advice still rings true to this day. “Think before you speak.” Fortunately, this happened a very long time ago, but I remember it to this day.
What if Gideon had become excited and moved his army before he let God finish giving instructions on how he was to accomplish this victory? It would have been all about Gideon and not about God.
We need to listen to God as He builds in us how we are to receive His instructions and not go with incomplete direction. God wants us to listen carefully to His guidance. We gain guidance through His Word and time in prayer. We need to be looking for His instructions so that what He desires will be fulfilled. Otherwise, it will be about us and not about Him, and we know that is not right.
Key Point: It is fine to be excited about something. But STOP! Think before you speak! Is what I am about to say benefiting the Kingdom of God? Is how I am about to say it going to honor God? Think about it first, then say what God has placed in your mind and heart, reflecting Him.
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, Help me to guard my thoughts and tongue that I may honor You in all that I say and do. Help me so that what I say will be well thought out and that I may be patient in my conversations with others, reflecting You along the way. I ask in Jesus’ name, AMEN!!!
Have a Blessed and Wonderful Day!!!
