No One…...
Luke 9:62 Jesus replied, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God." (NIV)
I enjoyed running into this verse. I read it over several times, and the meaning sticks solid on its purpose in my life, and I wanted to share it with you. Do you ever feel like the only thing keeping you from serving a holy God is your past? Do not feel alone. Satan would love to end our outreach to others by convincing us that we are unworthy of our testimony in Christ because of our past. Good news folks, we are unworthy PERIOD! But we have Christ and His shed blood on Calvary qualifies us to become God's children with ALL the privileges that come with it. Does this mean that we are not responsible for our past or the resultant consequences? No, it does not. But it does mean that we are forgiven, and that equals spiritual freedom. We must remember that we as believers are keeping company with some of the most well-known adulterers, murderers, liars, cheats, and thieves, just to name a few. And God STILL used these men. They were King David, Matthew, Paul, and Onesimus, to name a few.
When a farmer plows a field, he sets his sights on a distant permanent mark on the horizon and follows that point until he makes the turn and goes to the opposite end of the field where he again sets his sights on another permanent mark on the horizon. He never looks back, he never plows the same row twice, he never loses his focus, and God expects us to do the same in life.
When I was about 12 years old my dad sent me to the field on the farm, furthest from the house and with the tractor fitted with the bottom plow I set out to plow the field. I made a mess and returned to the house almost out of gas and only a few rows plowed. I got nowhere. Needless to say, dad was a bit upset. He returned with me to the lower backfield and showed me what to do. He plowed with me for two full rows, and I did the rest on one tank of gas with some left over. I focused and was determined on doing a good job so dad would not have to see another mess. Well, that is what our heavenly Father wants us to be in our focus on Him in life. If I had continually looked back while plowing that field, I would have made another mess.
God wants us to move forward. He gives us all the instructions that we need in His Word, yet we still mess up. Colossians 3:2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. Move toward the mark. Set your sights on the things above. Do not depend on the things here below. Move forward! Hit the mark and grow in Christ as He draws us nearer to Him in the process. He wants to fulfill our lives with Himself.
Key Thought: Anything worldly that we try to fill our lives with will leave us empty. Only Christ can fill us up.
Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, help me to not sin against You. Help me to look to You for strength and purpose, always realizing that You are the way the truth and the life. Amen!
Have a GREAT day!
In Christ,
